Memorial Day – A Grateful Nation Remembers

Memorial Day – A Grateful Nation Remembers

It’s Memorial Day weekend and for many of us we are hustling about, getting ready for the long weekend.  Heading off to graduations, family picnics, planning a big day at the range or perhaps heading out for the last days of turkey season in a last ditch effort to harvest a bird.  Big plans will keep us all busy this weekend for the unofficial kick-off to summer.

But, let’s not forget why we celebrate Memorial Day and recognize the solemn reasons for its existence.  The first “Decoration Day” was proclaimed by General John Logan following the Civil War and observed for the first time on May 30, 1868.  It was originally celebrated by decorating the grave sites of fallen soldiers.  The day was officially named Memorial Day by federal law in 1967 and in 1971, it became a national holiday to be celebrated on the last Monday in May.

All of us at Mossberg hope you have a safe holiday weekend and hope you will join us in remembering our fallen heroes.
