Finding a Dog Trainer

Finding a Dog Trainer

Duck dog trainers are not all created equal. If you are going to find someone to train your hunting dog, it's really more like an interview process. Lawson Barker, host of YOURDOG and co-founder of Red River Retrievers, walks you through three quick filters on how to find a trainer that aligns with what you want out of a duck dog or any hunting dog for that matter.

The big three facets Lawson covers are:

  1. Defining Expectations. Knowing what kind of hunting retriever you want is paramount in the process of finding someone to train your dog.
  2. The Facility This can be a massive indicator. Any dog trainer worth that is full-time and fully invested into training hunting dogs will have a facility that is clean, well kept, and something they don't mind showing you.
  3. The Dog Handler Lawson covers why it matters to have a dog trainer that loves the sport and the role they play in it.
