Why Your Best Deer Stand Might Be a Bad Setup

Choosing the best deer stand location is about more than fresh sign. In this whitetail hunting tip, we break down one of the most overlooked parts of any deer hunting setup: stand access.

Legendary deer hunter and researcher Bill Winke one said, "I'll take a decent deer stand with bulletproof access any day over a hot stand that runs a risk of deer knowing I'm coming in or out."

We're hanging a tree stand in an oak flat loaded with acorns, fresh scrapes, and heavy deer movement. But instead of just hunting the hottest spot, we look at how to get in and out without blowing deer out of the area before the hunt even starts.

In this deer hunting video, we cover:

• How to plan entry and exit routes to your deer stand

• Using terrain to stay hidden on the way in

• Hunting the wind and managing scent

• Reading bedding areas, food sources, and scrapes

• Predicting how whitetails travel through an oak flat

• Why the best tree isn't always on the hottest sign

Sometimes the best tree is the one you can actually hunt clean. Low-impact access keeps deer using the area naturally, and that's a big part of smart wildlife management on any property you hunt.

If you're hanging stands, scouting whitetails, or getting ready for deer season, this one detail can make a huge difference in your success.
